Florencia Sanmartino is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Cádiz, specializing in translational neuroscience of movement disorders, with expertise in multimodal electrophysiology, neuroimaging, and neuromodulation.
Her research investigates the neural mechanisms underlying motor and cognitive dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease, with a particular focus on cortico-subcortical interactions and basal ganglia pathophysiology. A central aim of her work is to elucidate how aberrant network dynamics within these circuits give rise to clinical symptoms and how these dynamics are modulated by therapeutic interventions.
To this end, she employs a multimodal framework integrating invasive and non-invasive electrophysiology — including intracranial local field potential (LFP) recordings from basal ganglia nuclei, scalp EEG, and peripheral physiological measures — neuroimaging, and both invasive (deep brain stimulation, DBS) and non-invasive (transcranial magnetic stimulation, TMS) neuromodulation strategies. A methodological hallmark of her work is the simultaneous co-registration of scalp EEG and intracranial LFP signals in awake patients undergoing DBS, enabling direct interrogation of cortico-basal ganglia circuit dynamics.
Through this integrative approach, she aims to advance the understanding of disease mechanisms and inform the development of personalised therapeutic strategies in movement disorders.
